Coastal Landcare

Founded in 2002 for the environment group at James Cook University, Cairns Campus students. This soon became community based.
Revegetation of creeks running into Cattana Wetland  and Half Moon Bay has been the main focus of this group which is now widely community supported. Development on this north side of Cairns has also seen cane farms disappear to be replaced with a sea of housing. Many of the developments have been and continue to be controversial as patches of remnant vegetation are removed for yet more concrete jungles. The beach suburbs have been the focus for major housing development and the removal of bushland and melaleuca swamp. Residents frequently initiate revegetation projects and they are encouraged to manage their own projects.

The resident who initiated this project received an award of appreciation from his local ratepayers Association for his efforts. Plants grow very quickly in the wet tropics ( but so do the weeds) so maintenance is a major task. This has been a very well managed site with the incorporated group acting as enablers for a community idea again.
