Cairns Urban Landcare

Founded 1995

Over the past 6 years Cairns Urban Landcare (CUL) has become totally urban. This has occurred at frightening speed and great cost to the environment.
CUL now tries to keep up with new development on creeks to restore native vegetation and prevent exotic plants from being planted on creek banks by new residents. Emphasis is on community involvement with many sites now being revegetated  and maintained by residents.

McKinnon Creek was the first new project on a creek not on our plan, initiated and carried out totally by six residents. We provided plants, site preparation, fertilizer and mulch to keep them engaged until we could lodge a funding submission for the whole creek behind new homes rapidly being built. The funding was not granted in  Australian Government Envirofund Rounds 9 and 10 in 2007.

The McKinnon Creek project was funded in 2008 by an Australian Government Caring for Country grant and has had excellent support from new residents.
